Fish & Co. @ Novena Velocity

Went to Fish & Co. @ Novena Velocity (actually it is Novena Square) for lunch.
We were the 1st few customers there.

Today's experience was quite satisfying - not because of the food. Firstly, one of the families there came with a baby who was an attention-seeker and hyperactive. Kept yelling to his/her mom for attention. Secondly, the music they played made me think that I was in California Fitness and the CD player kept breaking down and the CD kept skipping [just imagining hearing 'da da da da da da da ' in a very fast tempo].

Waited abt half and hour for the food. Thank goodness it was not disappointing. Yes, it is the Classic Fish & Chip. You can't go wrong with that. The batter is just nice - not too thick and the fry to just the right degree. And I always love the sauce... I think it is butter? Tastes great!

This is the other dish we ordered - Grilled Salmon with Cajun Rice. The salmon skin was very crispy and the rice has raisins in it. Nice.

Attention to Citibank Card holders, you get a free drink (Passion Fruit, Ice Tea, Coke or Sprite) for each main course ordered :) We only knew about it when we were making the payment.

Aji by Hanabi

Sigh.... had a not-so-cheap dinner with not-so-satisfying dinner. Went to Vivocity. There are really a lot of restaurants there, some are opened, some are not.
Had my dinner with R at Aji by Hanabi.

It is a very modern and zen-looking restaurant and plays soothing Japanese songs. You'd imagine it will be a satisfying dinner. We were directed to the sets right at a far end. Next to us was a glass wall, looking outside is Sentosa. Wow! Sounds nice?

This is a feature wall in the restaurant.

The menu and the food in there looks very delicious as well.

Even the condiments containers and chopsticks covers are so nice, zen and elegant.

Here comes the main course.

His main course - Grilled Salman in Black Pepper with pickled veg. 6 pieces.

Mine main course - Grilled Cod Fish. (Our expression was ' Huh, you mean only like that ah'?. Haha.) But it was quite delicious. Love the deep fried lotus roots.

Our shared dish - Deep fried chicken with spring onion. Nice presentation but nothing too spectacular.

I suspect the aircon was a little too cold for the restaurant cos our food turned cold real fast.

Jos' Japanese Lunch

Was thinking - shd I go tapau or shd I cook? Since the weather looks like a killer, a packet of ramen (actually it is only instant noodle) is enough to make me happy. In the end, I whipped up my own little Japanese Lunch. keke.
Here's what you need....
1. Japanese brand Nissin ramen

2. Japanese Ready-to-Eat Curry

3. Miso Soup Paste

And then, here what you get :)

A Japanese Lunch complete with ramen, curry & miso soup.

Total preparation time : 3 mins for ramen, 2 mins for curry and 2 mins for soup.

Total damage : less than $6.

Leather Jacket Fillet @ Fosters

I have written on my other blog about my lunch at Fosters. Like I said, ambience and service were good. I would also say it is quite value-for-money. For $12.90+++, it came with bread, soup, main, dessert and tea. But the selection for set lunch was limited. There was a choice of fish, chicken or beef only.
Those who ordered Leather Jacket Fillet were quite disappointed.
The fish's jacket was probably too thin that the fish caught a cold and lost its taste bud (失去味觉).
It was too blend.

The bread and soup.

Love this butter.

Main dish (Leather jacket fillet) with fries and greens.

Rum & Raisin ice cream. Yummy!

We also shared this basket of chicken wings. This was good. The wings were hot and crispy when they were served. It came with Thai chilli sauce. This is the dish that makes it worth another visit to Fosters.

阿里山台湾牛腩面

Urgh! Blogger is playing punk again! My entire original post was lost! :( :(
Anyway, this is about a porridge cum noodle place located at Upper Serangoon Road. I think they are opened 24-hours if I remember correctly.

Wanted to go for the porridge but I had wanton noodle instead. The wantons were good.

Another dish worth mentioning is the Deep Fried Mango Salad. I suspect they used fresh mango for this dish. It is a MUST TRY!!!

Songpyeon 송편

Songpyon (rice cake with pine needles)

August 15th by the lunar calendar is Chuseok, the greatest traditional holiday in Korea, which falls on September 17th this year. Like on other traditional holidays, people have special food eaten largely on Chuseok and one of them is songpyon, mug bean-filled rice cake steamed on pine needles. There is a Korean saying that a woman who makes pretty songpyons would have pretty daughters. Enjoy that special holiday feel by making these cute little bite-sized rice cakes.

Ingredients
5 cups rice flour
1/2 cup sugar
2tsp salt
1 cup red beans
1Tbsp cinnamon

Direction
1. Sift together rice flour and salt once. Then add a cup of boiling water and mix well to make a ball of dough. Knead the dough well to make if soft and pliable.
2. Wash red beans well and steam thoroughly. When the beans are done, mash finely with sugar and cinnamon.
3. Shape the dough into a ball the size of a ping pong ball and using your thumb, make a small crater to put in the filling.
4. Spread pine needles at the bottom of a clay steamer and place songpyons. Repeat the step for a layer after layer.
5. Steam for about 20 minutes or until the rice cakes are done. Prevent songpyons from sticking to each other by painting them with water and sesame seed oil.

Tips
1. There are several types of filling beside red beans. For the chestnut filling, steam chestnuts and mash them with sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pound roasted sesame seeds together with sugar and salt to make sweet sesame seed filling. For the traditional mug bean filling, repeat the same procedure as the chestnut filling. If you are not too particular about sweet fillings, steam black beans and season with a bit of salt before sticking them in songpyons.
2. To add color to songpyong, Koreans used all natural ingredients like mugworts for green, gardenia seeds for yellow, grapes for purple, and carrot juice for orange. Squeeze out the juice from these ingredients and add to the flour mixture to make colorful, brilliant songpyons.

Char Kway Teow @ Holland Market

Went to Holland Market again and this time I tried the Char Kway Teow.

I would say this stall is quite efficient - good numbering system and fast service. Quality hasn't been compromised much as well, except that noodle was a little soft. Not sure if it was over-cooked. Overall, it was quite delicious. My colleagues were betting if I would finish it up. And yes, I did.

Grapes from Hwaseong, Korea (한국산 화성포도)

I finally bought those grapes that I have been thinking of... since the last time I went to Korea in Sep 04. This time round, the grapes came to Sunny Island of Singapore :)

If you think these grapes looks like any ordinary 'black' grapes, then you ought to give it a try. The thing is, they taste like Gummy Bear candies!

And the way to eat these grapes is not to pop it into your mouth and chew. You should pluck it from the stem, hold the grape with 3 fingers, with the part that is detached from the stem kissing your lips, suck the fruit into your mouth leaving the grape skins behind. :)

Check out Tiff's posting on these grapes and about Hwaseong.

Slippery Lobster Spagetti @ Galilee

That's my dinner for tonight @ Sengkang Library. Yes, there is a Galilee (cafe) in the library and they serve western food. The spag is a new dish and on promotion. I have no idea why the dish is called Slippery Lobster. Maybe the lobster tries to slip away from the spag.

It has 2 halves of a mini lobster. Overall rating, I would say, 3 out of 5. The lobster is a little fishy and the spag is slightly blend.

天外天潮州鱼头炉 (Tian Wai Tian Fish Head Steamboat Restaurant)

Went to this place for dinner today. It is located at 1383 Serangoon Road... er... somewhere near Boon Keng MRT Station.
It looks like a rundown coffeshop but it was already quite crowded at 5.30pm. Since it was our first time there, we din quite know what and how to order. We looked ard at what others were eating, they looked pretty standard - steamboat, sambal kangkong, fried chicken, hong shao beancurd or prawn date.

Here's our dishes.

Very delicious. The steamboat is charcoal-cooked. No fishy taste and there is some sweetness in the soup. Besides the fish, there is cabbage, lettuce and yam. The fish is very fresh and cooked till just right.

We also order a sambal kangkong. It could have been spicer....

By the time our fried chicken came, we have already finished our steamboat and veg. So, we tapau-ed it back... :(
Overall, the food is good but service is quite slow. We waited for abt 30 mins for our 1st dish to be served.
Total damage : $35 for 2 persons.
