SG Cafe Series: Kith Cafe



This is 1 café which appears to be full-house almost ALL the time.  If you go on weekends, it is not advisable if you go with an empty stomach.  Simply because - be prepared to queue and wait.  The café is packed especially during breakfast!

There are seats in both the indoor and outdoor sections but seating capacity is limited by the shop space.

The service staff are quite efficient and experienced.  There aren't the typical pretty-looking waiters and waitresses that you may find in our cafes.  The feeling I get at the café is rather homely... it is like visiting a neighbourhood coffeeshop (abit an atas one) but in downtown.

Tried the Spanish Hot Chocolate with Fresh Cream.  It tasted great!  The chocolate was thick and the satisfying thing is that - it tasted like cocoa.  This is not meant to be lame because too many cafes serve hot chocolate that does not meet the drink's standard. 

Bought these golden-coin butter cookies too.  The cookies are big, really rich (and complete) in taste and fresh!  2 thumbs up from me.  If you enjoy rich cookies, you will love this!

YY Kafei Dian 喜园咖啡店

Not all coffeeshops open at 5am.  That's what I realised.  It was quite an experience for someone who hardly wakes up early just to catch breakfast.  For this breakfast trips, there were 3 surprising moments. 

Firstly, I was astonished to find that the shuttle at the coffeeshop, located at the junction of Purvis Street and Beach Road, was still closed when it was already approaching 8am.  The coffeeshop officially starts business at 8am.  Not surprising, I was the first customer for that day.  A little annoyed though since I had to leave by 8.30am and therefore, breakfast had to be rushed through.

The coffeeshop is located amongst the rows of old shop-houses.  It is quite tranquil to sit down and have a slow breakfast at these old-school coffeeshops, if you are not rushing for time.  YY serves economic fried bee hoon as well as toast bread in the morning.

The second surprise I had was - the coffeeshop went from empty at 8am to almost full-house within 10mins!  All of the sudden, the place became lively!

I chose to have the toast bread, soft-boiled egg and teh si.  $3.30 for the set.  Quite reasonably priced for a meal that is within the CBD.

The soft-boiled egg was the most satisfying of the 3 items.  The egg yolk was firm while the egg white was watery.  I think only those who are skilled can make such al-dente soft-boiled eggs.  As for the bread, I had asked for butter only but they had given me butter with kaya.  But nevermind, when life gives you lemon, you make into lemonade. 

And I thought that the dark kaya that they use is their signature ingredient.  The third surprise was that it tasted less than ordinary standard leh... sign.  And for the teh-si, it was also so-so and a little "siap".  I really wonder how the siap-ness came about since I am the first customer and the tea should have been freshly brewed?  Perhaps I should just stick with Teh and not Teh-si the next time round, if there is a next time.  Nonetheless, it was good to be an early bird once in a while to experience the Singapore breakfast culture =D

Getting there: Take MRT to Bugis Station.  Use the exit that heads towards Bugis Junction Shopping Mall.  Go to level 1, and head towards Inter-Continental Hotel.  At the cross-junction, walk along North Bridge Road and pass by the National Library.  Keep walking.  At the traffic light in front of Bras Basah Complex, cross over to the opposite side.  Walk along Purvis Street until the end.

Ya Kun (Kaya Butter Cracker)

Life can be just as simple as kaya and butter with toasted crackers.  The crunchy crackers tasted extremely good with the thick slab of melting butter in between.  That's the type of simple pleasures that our parents and grandparents had experienced when life was so much simpler and unsophisticated.  Highly recommend that you try this during breakfast or afternoon, if you haven done so at Ya Kun.  $1.60 for this set of crackers.

Buttermilk Waffle @ Coffee Club

Good Morning! breakfast set from Coffee Club @ Tiong Bahru Plaza.   Took me a while to decide from the menu with about 10 choices.  Finally, I decided to try the Buttermilk Waffle. The breakfast set came with a complimentary coffee or tea. 

A set of 3 waffles was served about 10mins later.  I was initially a little disappointed that the waffles were not piping hot when served.  I like hot waffles because it gives the impression that it was freshly made... =P

The waffles was sprinkled lightly with icing sugar and doused with maple syrup.  It came with a small pot of blueberry jam and unsalted SCS butter (not in photo).  The waffles was soft but a little dry.  I always like to taste food in its original taste before adding other stuff.  The plain waffles was.... really plain.  But as soon as I spread the SCS butter on it, the waffle became much delicious compared to when it was just a plain piece of waffle!!  It was also great when i dipped it lightly into the jam. 

At $7.90 (before taxes), the breakfast set was "expensive" compared to other breakfast I could get from Tiong Bahru Plaza - Ya Kun or Mac or Toast Box.  However, because of its "atas-ness", the cafe was one of the quieter place to munch away your breakfast, and relax yourself with some light jazz music... on a Sunday morning.

永和豆浆油条大王 (Yong He Dou Jiang You Tiao Da Wang)

Once in a while, it's quite nice to sit in this nostalgic soya bean drink place for some you-tiao and shao bing :)  The shop is now located at 517 Geylang Road (Tel: 6745 5682) and the nearest MRT is Aljunied Station.  Walk along Lor 25A until you reach Geylang Road, turn left and keep walking.  Just before Lor 27A, you will see the shop.
