New Location : Dong Shen Frog Porridge

Linking back to my earlier post on Dong Shen Frog Porridge, their new location is actually in coffeeshop, at the junction of Macpherson Road and Upper Serangoon Road, next to the old Jackson Market.

Not sure of the name of the coffeeshop but there is a big signage that says "Bayshore Delicious". Apparently Bayshore's specialty is in crabs and the owner is Tang Hu. Don't be surprise to see photos of him taken with other celebrities plastered all over the walls.

Dong Shen's signage...

The stall... which is not very prominent... and you might just mistook it for selling Brands chicken essence instead of frog porridge...

The price list....
Spring onion & ginger frog legs for 2 persons. Yummy.

Not sure why... actually it costs less now.. for a meal for 2 pax. Did auntie miscalculated?? I am not sure...

Manna Korean Cuisian @ Lau Pa Sat

I chanced upon Manna @ Lau Pa Sat and discovered that they serve buckwheat cold noodles, which it not commonly found at hawker stalls. Of course, they serve other regular dishes including bulgogi, bibimbap, ramyeon etc.

The stall is located somewhere near Cross Street, furthest corner from Boon Tat Street.

The main deciding factor for delicious cold noodle is really the sauce and the texture of the noodle. Sounds simple but i am sure it requires to make sure that the noodles do not clamp together after cooking in hot water and running through ice water...

The sauce is the main ingredient that spices up the plain, cold noodle. The other ingredients including the meat, egg and vegatables are garnishes (at least to me).

For $6, this is really worthwhile. The standard is quite there and the serving portion is quite huge. I would think that this portion can easily fill up 2 persons...

Bakerzin

Even if you're not a fan of cakes, sweet stuff or desserts. This is something that one must try at least once in your entire life.

Bakerzin Classic - The Warm Chocolate Cake.

Obviously, the cake is warm but it is the dark chocolate that oozes from within that will warm your heart... the vanilla ice-cream adds to the perfection.

$9.80 per cake.

Haato - Ridgewood Close

Was at Haato again, this time for a farewell lunch. Actually I was in the mood for snacks and ice-cream... er... gelato.
That's my milk-flavour gelato. Everyone gave me that usual unusual stare..."What? Milk?" Frankly, it is really quite yummy. And it is the 1st time I come across Milk-flavour gelato. It went well with the waffle.

And here's "snacks" - yasai croquette (vegetable croquette). The dip for the croquette is quite food and it looked like it is made up of spicy mayo. In fact, I probably would not be able to finish up all 4 pieces of croquette if not for the dip.

Will be back to try out more gelato flavours from Haato... or when I wanna chill out with a few frens during lunch.

Curry Favour Japanese Reataurant

CURRY FAVOUR
39 Stamford Road
#01-09 Stamford House
Singapore 178885
Tel: 68831087

Can't remember when Curry Favour was setup... As far as I can remember, I have been wanting to try the curry @ Curry Favour for the longest time but no kakis to go with.... what's more when it is Japanese curry.

My group of very wonderful colleagues decided to celebrate my birthday in a small way ie. just the few of us, though there will be another one 2 days later, where it is normally done in a big way, like 20 of us.

When they asked me where I'd like to go, somehow I could only think of Curry Favour... it must have lingered in my mind for too long that the name just got stuck there.

The restaurant is located at Stamford House... the building where the signature MPH store used to be located. The curry restaurant was just a few doors away. It is not a big restaurant. Probably can only house like 50 customers at 1 go. The entire ambience was cosy.

All 5 of us ordered curry and there was nothing else but compliments on how tasty the curries were. Well, I was both heartily satisfied with the food and also that my colleagues like the curries. Phew!

This is the Half-size Chicken Stew Curry. Besides the tender chicken chunks, there were also potatoes and carrot pieces. It came with Japanese rice and a scoop of potatoe salad. With an additional $1.50 top-up, we get a miso soup + a drink (either green tea or soft drinks).

We ordered a side dish - potatoe to share... it was well mashed yet there are potatoe chunks in between. The taste is pretty unique and delicious.

My colleagues bought a slice of "birthday cake" from a connecting cafe, for me. It is chocolate chip brownie with ice cream. Surprise!

It was a really enjoyable meal... with good food and what's more, excellent companion.

Pow Sing Restaurant

Was supposed to have dinner @ Sushi Tei (Serangoon Garden) but we were told to wait for 30mins for a table. So we decided to find alternatives... preferably with no waiting time...

Decide to try our luck at Pow Sing Restaurant, whose specialty is hainanese chicken rice. We were lucky enough to be offered a seat with zero waiting time... cos the restaurant seemed quite packed. Boy, it was noisy, noisy, noisy! We were seated next to the "chopping counter" and there was continuous chop, chop, chop sound. Why can't they just move the counter to the kitchen? Sigh...

65 Serangoon Garden Way Singapore 555961
Tel : 6286 4813 Fax : 6282 5016
Daily Opening Hours : 11am - 3pm (Lunch) 5pm - 10pm (Dinner)

Though they specialise in hainanese chicken rice, they do serve a variety of dishes including fish, seafood, prawn, vegetables, tauhu etc.

We ordered this nonya chap chye.. which to me, it is quite disappointing. The gravy is not flavourful and the entire dish was rather bland.

Mapo Tauhu was better... at least the minced meat well marinated and the chilli padi brings out the spiciness of this dish. The tauhu was also quite silky smooth.

The chicken dish was the best of all... although we had asked for chicken breast meat, it was quite tender and smooth.

Due to the popularity of the chicken meat, be prepared that this main dish was be the last item to be served on your dining table... so do eat slowly while the dishes are being served. Else, you'd run into risk of asking for a 2nd rice serving to go with the chicken meat.

Kyomomoyama (京桃山) at The Central

Was supposed to have dinner at Clarke Quay but the place was full.. so we headed towards The Central since there are many restaurants there and my impression has always been - The Central is not as popular as it shd be yet.

The thing about The Central is - there are really quite many Japanese restaurants such as sun with moon, waraku, tom ton, ma maison etc etc. It has become an 'eating mall' more than a 'shopping mall'.

We checked out several outlets but finally decided on Kyomomoyama, a Taiwanese franchaise, cos... zero waiting time. haha.

"Will you hoot me if I suggest to go check out another place"
"YES!"

Kyomomoyama (京桃山)
6, Eu Tong Sen Street
#03-87/100/101/110
Singapore 059817
Tel: +65-65348001

The menu selection is quite limited ... anyway, I decided to go for something which I seldom order - Unagi Don.

The unagi portion was quite huge - 2 broad slices. Actually the amount was a little too much for me. Got a bit jerlat and I could not finish the 2nd slice. The rice came with sprinkles of seaweed and some soy sauce.

Would I return again? Well, if other restaurants are fully booked again...

Traditional Butter-Cream Cake

This is MY type of cake...traditional butter cream in the centre layer, on top with some cheena design. The level of deliciousness truly depends on how the cream is made. The cakes usually come in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, coffee or pandan flavour. Most of the time, the top and bottom are of different flavour. The cream is made of salted butter with sugar and egg, i supposed.

You can find these in those old-school confectionery / cake shops or at Swee Heng. SH outlets are usually co-located at MRT stations.

4 slices for $2.50... used to be juzt $2.20 though.

Pasta De Waraku @ The Central

I have heard many rave reviews about Pasta de Waraku since last year. Finally had the chance to taste it .... quite happy that we decided to wait... a long one. Was there at 7.15pm and the restaurant had no more seats. We left our name and contact number and we eventually got a seat about 45 mins later. During the wait, the restaurant served green tea to the waiting guests and gave little toys to kids to entertain them...

The outlet at The Central (level 2). Signature and standard deco at the entrance of Pasta de Waraku cafes. You get to look at the display menu and decide in advance what you wanna treat yourself to...

The 4 of us decided that we shall try a bit of everthing... so we ordered the Waraku Carbonara and macoroni gratin set... which came with a soup and salad.

The macaroni gratin... the top layer slightly burnt cheese is what I like most about this dish...heehee.

Pork cutlet curry rice... the curry sauce is served in a separate "aladdin" metal bowl. You can add the amount of curry to your liking.

The super thin mushroom pizza... which measures approx 2mm on thickness. Pizzas come in 2 sizes and we ordered the mini size, which was cut into 4 slices.

My friends had wanted to order the strawberry ice dessert but it was sold out. So they chose the chocolate flavour instead. The orange topping is actually some orange paste.

The other dessert that we had was this green tea ice cream with rice ball (taste like tang yuan) and red bean paste. If you like milky green tea ice cream, this is one you shd not miss...

Overall, I am very satisfied with all 4 dishes that I tried... will definitely be back again to try other dishes!

No Signboard Seafood @ Vivocity

Ever wondered why No Signboard Seafood is known as such? Well, according to info on its website, it started out as a hawker stall and it did not have a signboard. That was in the 1970s. That was how it got started.
From hawker stall to a popular medium-high end restaurant for mainly family gatherings, it now has several outlets. The recent one I went is at Vivocity, 3rd level. I must say I like the interior deco very much. It is a hybrid of modern western and chinese. Just imagine black chandeliers with golden pillars. Thought it was quite cool...
A word of caution, reservations are necessary if you do not like to wait...

One of their signature dishes is chilli crab. Sri Lanka crabs are popular and most 'economical', costing $40/kg. We ordered 2 small crabs and it costs us $92. The most expensive range of crab costs $180/kg... er, don't ask me why. Probably, atas crabs are probably meant for atas people, which I am not.
If you like to dip mantous in those chilli gravy, you may replace mantous with rice. Each mantou is only about 3cm x 3cm x 2cm. Each serving is only 6. The mantous are quite yummy. Crispy and golden brown on the outside and soft in the inside...

Salad Youtiao - pretty normal standard.... as usual, mayo comes along with it.
Coffee Pork Ribs - coated with sweetened coffee (probably with honey) on fatty ribs. A few pieces will be sufficient. Too much of it will become jerlat cos of the fatty ribs.

Garlic Doumiao - it was expecting those thin doumiao and only realised that they use leafy ones when I was eating half way through. Pretty normal standard.

Total damage was $165 incl tax... would i return again? Probably for the crabs =)

O Dae Yang Korean Seafood Restaurant - New Location

O Dae Yang has finally re-opened.... it is now located at 76 Peck Seah Street S (079331) [Tel : 63965356]. Easily accessible by Tanjong Pagar MRT, just 3 mins walk when you reach the street level.

The new place is much much smaller compared to its old location. But again, this is just amt the normal size of a Korean Restaurant found in town area.

On the right side are 2 private rooms that can sit up to a max of 8 pax (a little squeeze). 6 pax wld be just comfortable...

The beautiful thing about a Korean meal... lots of appetizers to whet your taste buds before the main courses are served. The ikan bilis & peanuts are to die for... they are really good. But it is not a common side dish. Perhaps they are adapting to the local taste buds.

Here comes the main course - Korean Glass Noodles with Vegetables.

Dak Bulkogi - BBQ Chicken.

Stir Fried Pork Belly.... pork slices were a little too thick for a non-regular pork eater like me.

Seafood Soondubu Chigae (Stew).

Seafood Pancake.

Our drinks - Hite beer.... my, my... the beer costs so much more here...
Dessert - Watermelon and pineapple

Fruits - pineapple, rock melon + pear. The rock melon is very very sweet and fragrant... Special skills are needed to cut the pear, can u see it?
Generally, the restaurant ambience is really good, just like how it was @ the old location, except that the place is way smaller now.

Kim Dae Mun Korean Cuisine

Located at the food court below Le Meridien Hotel, it is not difficult to spot the stall because it has a never-ending line of queue during lunch and dinner.

This is my all-time favourite - BBQ Chicken set ($6.50). Besides chicken, there is also BBQ pork and BBQ beef available. Note that the BBQs are cooked in water and not oil. Something for the health-conscious to note.

Potato-pancake ($3.50). Some people may not find this dish special but I like it. It becomes rather tasty when dip into the soy sauce.
Korean Fried Glass Noodles ($4.50)... another yummy dish cooked using thick vermicelli with pork, carrot, spring onion, cabbage and egg. The ingredients are simple and I suspect the secret to this dish is the cooking sauce used, which I am not sure what they are.
Kimchi Fried Rice ($4.50)...needless to say, it is rice fried with kimchi. Though it is a simple dish, the right type of kimchi has to be used for this dish to be yummy. I'd say, Kim Dae Mun's one is quite appetising. You may just ask for me after finishing this one big plate....

Reasonably-priced yummy dishes. Great value for money...
