[CNY 2014] New Year Snacks Part 2

Bought more CNY cookies and I seem to be particularly attracted to gula Melaka cookies this year.  The second batch of cookies that I bought for this CNY is from Cedele Depot, Artisan Handmade Cookies.  Although they are a little more expensive, I think it is worth it because the cookies are hand-made, do not contain artificial ingredients and there is no trans fats.

Gula Melaka Coconut - Love the nostalgic taste of gula Melaka and the declicious desiccated coconut.  The cookies are really crispy.

Pineapple Pocket Pie - This isn't my first time getting the pineapple pockets for CNY.  The pineapple pockets are for those who likes buttery pastry.  Cedele's version isn't too overpowering.  Soft and firm pastry filled with sweet & sourish pineapple jam.

[CNY 2014] New Year Snacks

It is the time of the year again!  Lunar New Year comes faster this year, just within a month from the start of 2014.  I contemplated quite a bit what new year snacks to get this year.  Pineapple tart is a must but I have yet to find one which really excites me.  While shopping at Takashimaya CNY fair, I chanced upon 2 snacks from Rasa Sayang which are rather unique and tasty.  Their snacks are made in Indonesia.

The first is Oven Baked Purple Yam Chips.  It is oven baked and there isn't other added flavouring.  It is simply thinly sliced purple yam, sent into the oven.  Sounds healthy?  I think so.  It tasted so.  The only unhealthy bit is that some vegetable oil has been used during the baking process.

The second is Gula Melaka Kueh Bangkit (literally means fragrant cake).  Tasty kuah bangkit should crumble and melt in the mouth, not too floury, not too sweet and has a fragrant coconut taste.  It is actually quite labour intensive to make kueh bangkit.  The additional plus point to this particular kueh bangkit is the gula Melaka taste.  Double coconut happiness!

Ok, I have a week to continue my search for the perfect pineapple tart this year.  Send me recommendations!

Delicious Brownies and Cookies from BakeryHearts

If you haven't heard of BakeryHearts yet, it is a humble social enterprise under Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centres, with a social mission of helping families.  The bakers may not be top patisseries but hey, their confectionery is not bad.  My personal favourite is their sugared butter cookie.

For the coming festive season, why not give their cookies and cakes a try?

SG Cafe Series: Kith Cafe

This is 1 café which appears to be full-house almost ALL the time.  If you go on weekends, it is not advisable if you go with an empty stomach.  Simply because - be prepared to queue and wait.  The café is packed especially during breakfast!

There are seats in both the indoor and outdoor sections but seating capacity is limited by the shop space.

The service staff are quite efficient and experienced.  There aren't the typical pretty-looking waiters and waitresses that you may find in our cafes.  The feeling I get at the café is rather homely... it is like visiting a neighbourhood coffeeshop (abit an atas one) but in downtown.

Tried the Spanish Hot Chocolate with Fresh Cream.  It tasted great!  The chocolate was thick and the satisfying thing is that - it tasted like cocoa.  This is not meant to be lame because too many cafes serve hot chocolate that does not meet the drink's standard.

Bought these golden-coin butter cookies too.  The cookies are big, really rich (and complete) in taste and fresh!  2 thumbs up from me.  If you enjoy rich cookies, you will love this!

Goldilocks has arrived in Singapore!

If you ask me to describe Philippines using food, the first interesting food that comes to my mind would be the Goldilocks Polvoron. To confess, I only got to know about this brand late last year when an intern brought this sweets to office and shared with us.  This shortbread cookies is soft and a little crumbly.  The most addictive thing about this is that it melts in your mouth.

The good news now is that this sweets is spotted in NTUC!!  Go grab it, if you're a fan of this sweets!  However, there is a not-so-good news and that is.... there is only 1 flavour at this moment.  I hope they bring in more variety!

Within the yellow and blue box, there are 12 small pieces.

The close-up shot shows the expiry date of the cookie.  This is so useful, especially if you prefer to discard the box and keep the cookies in loose pieces.

So, check it out while it lasts!

Delcie's Desserts (Mud Fudge Cake)

I have been wanting to try the cakes and cookies from Delcie's Desserts for a loooong time. The opportunity finally came when Groupon was selling a coupon - $25 for $60 worth of cakes or desserts. The cakes from Delcie's aren't cheap, minimally $50+ for a small cake. This is because organic ingredients aren't cheap. More than 85% of the ingredients used are organic, according to the baker herself.

The Groupon coupon expired end of last year (which was like yesterday, haha) and I decided to use it to get a cake for a gathering which came up. Since the Mud Fudge cake was a popular one among the customers, I decided to give it a try. Here it is!

It came with thick layer of real chocolate (not cocoa). Besides being organic, the cake was baked egg-free, gluten-free and dairy-free. How will such a cake taste like? It was suprisely pretty sweet, the real chocolate was really good. Perhaps the best way to eat it is to heat up in microwave for 10 secs so that the chocolate will melt and the cake is warm. And there, you get a warm chocolate cake! Other than that, if you're someone who needs a cake to have butter taste, then sorry, I think it is not for you then.

The price for this cake was $70. =) The shop has moved to Upper Serangoon Road since Nov 2011. It is about 5 to 7 mins walk from Kovan MRT station, opposite Heartland Mall.

Since CNY is just around the corner, they have also started selling healthy CNY cookies. Tried some of the cookies while I was there to collect the cake, my personal favourite is the cashew cookies. Very fragrant cashew taste with cookies with the right crunchiness. The cookies aren't cheap either - $28 to $30+ per bottle. But for the reason of good health, it may be worth the investement =P

Midnight Baking

Was into the baking mood after tasting Mummy Lian's Devil's Food Cake. It was so yummy that I forgot to take a pic.
SMART ger also had a try in baking over Labour Day... that's her Raisin Cookie. Taste not bad too... it is the chewy type of cookie.

Since my oven has been left idling for some time, I decide to make Butter Cookies last night. Oh boy... it was 2am+ by the time I cleared up.
Since I did not have any Mixer, it was pure manual labour trying to cream the butter and sugar till fluffy. My arms are slightly aching now.

See my cookies with almond and cashew nuts? Looks good? But in actual fact, it wasnt as good as it looks. As the dough was too big thick, the center sections of the cookies were still moist. But R and I still ate them anyway.

Bought a mixer today and it definitely made work lighter and faster :) Finished baking at 12am+ a while ago.
Decided to improvise a little, and so I added cocoa powder and turned the butter cookie recipe into chocolate cookie recipe.
The cookies are much smaller learning from yesterday's lesson.
See the 3 dark dark cookies? They are further improvised into Cashew Choco Cookies and Almond Choco Cookies.
Anyone wants to try?

Here's the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup and 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1/4 cup and 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/4 egg
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and white sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the egg, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Combine the flour and salt; stir into the sugar mixture.
  • Cover dough, and chill for at least one hour. Chill cookie sheets.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • Press dough out onto ungreased, chilled cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly golden at the edges.
  • Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.
