Chellas Vegetarian Corner

Chellas Vegetarian Corner (70 Serangoon Road) is an cafe selling Indian food at Little India. It is located at the junction of Serangoon Road and Dunlop Street, just across Tekka Market.

The snacks at the display showcase caught my eyes initially. There were samosa, chips, muruku, curry puffs, 'sweet meat' etc etc.

These homemade potato chips ($1.80/100 grams) look really good and the counter 'man' asked if I would to sample it. That was it! It was so crispy and delicious. I think it tastes good cos of the spices used on it. Addictive is the word. So I bought 2 packets of 100 grams each. One for myself and one for my colleagues. My colleagues liked the chips so much that they were snapped up within 1/2 hr.

Since it was a hot afternoon, I thought long and hard which drink to get. Should I get a sinless drink like mineral water or just forget about the 'sins' and get a milk shake or lassi? Well, I gave in to temptation and went for the milk shake ($4.50).
Guess what - that was really sinful. The milk shake was made of 3 big scoops of ice cream + milk!!!

See... it was as 'sinful' as drinking ice cream! You can see how thick it looks from the pic.

2nd floor is an airconditioned dining area.

My fren, K, tried the Bombay set meal ($6.50), which is the 'chef's recommendation'. This set is value for money. It came with plain rice + spice rice, actually easily sufficient even if you were to share it with another person. Taste is good too. I like the yogurt side dish.

As for me, I ordered the 'Sizzler Kothu Parota' ($5). It is actually fried roti prata with some vegetarian. A little disappointed with this dish cos this dish lack taste uniqueness.

There are many more other dishes on the menu. I might just be back to try some others if I happen to be in Little India next time.

Modesto's

Went to Modesto's at Orchard Parade Hotel 2 times this week. Haha. I am not crazy. Nothing can stop me from feasting on good food.

The 1st time I went to Modesto's was maybe about 8 yrs ago. The spinach lagsane left a deep impression on me. I was a little disappointed when I could not find it on the menu anymore when I went back a few days ago.

Blessing in disguise, I found some other delicious food from this cosy Italian restaurant - Pizza Margherita! It is a traditional wood-fired thin crust pizza with simple ingredients such as tomato and cheese. The tasty juicy ingredients beneath the hot cheesey layer is what makes this pizza so delicious. (Mini pizza: $12.50).
The carbonara ($18) tastes alright for me but one of my colleagues thinks that it is on the creamy side.

I would definitely be back for more Pizza Margherita.

Dumpling Festival (aka Dragon Boat Festival)

To me, 端午节 = eat dumpling, more than watching any dragon boat race.

I miss the taste of dumplings that my mom used to make. But she has stopped making since last year. Greedy me decided to try out some gourmet dumplings from Orchard Hotel (Huating Restaurant). It costs $38+++ and includes 2 big meat HK style dumplings, 2 red bean dumplings & 2 5-grains dumplings!

It comes in a nice packaging box. Quite heavy also. 有分量。

These are the dumplings and its seasonings.

R and I decided to try the HK style meat dumpling (for our supper :P) So I tried steaming it using our microwave. It was not as easy as I thought. We spent about 10 mins trying to get the centre of the dumpling piping hot. It would have been better if we had done it with a proper steamer.

Here's how the dumpling looks, with some additional 料。haha.

Worth the money? It din quite suit our taste.

I still prefer my mom's dumplings lah.

Botak Jones (Clementi)

Have been hearing a fair bit about Botak Jones, amercian food @ kopitiam. Was curious and wanted to find out what's so interesting abou the place.
Finally checked it out on a late Thursday night. Heard that average waiting time for dinner is about 45 mins to an hour. I was lucky that my food came about 15 mins later. But take note, I was there at 9+pm.
There are several outlets in Singapore. Went to the Clementi outlet (Blk 325 Kopitiam) where it is walking distant from Clementi MRT station.

All in order... you need to Q to place your order. But you need not pay till your food is served. Main course comes in 2 size servings - regular or large.

Botak Jones merchandise is also on sale. You can browse it while Q-ing...

That's the kitchen area. The 'crew' are all in T-shirts and caps.

That's Fish & Chips ($6). 2 big slices of cripsy batter and LOTS of chips. This is their 招牌菜。

And, that's cajun chicken ($7). It has a thick layer of cheese on the chicken + cajun sauce.
Overall, food is not bad and they are definitely value for money :)

Salmon Tofu Kimchi Nabe (Sushi Tei)

Sushi Tei is having an 'early summer' promotion. Basically, it is a promotion on salmon dishes. I tried the Salmon Tofu Kimchi Nabe, thinking that something soupy will be healthier :P
It turned out that the serving is actually for 2 persons. Quite unbelievable since it is only $16.

Besides salmon, there was also swordfish, enoki mushroom, mushroom, veg, tofu and udon. The soup base is kimchi soup and refillable.

Very good and healthy meal. Best of all, value for money (if 2 persons are sharing it).

Manhill Restaurant (喜临门大饭店)

Tuck in a quiet corner along Pasir Panjang Road, at the junction of Jalan Pelepah, this traditional cantonese restaurant is patronised by Japanese diners. The indoor dining space is quite limited. So, best to make reservation to avoid disaapointment.

The restaurant is famous for its claypot dishes. If I recall correctly, each dining table has at least 1 claypot dish.
Besides the list of food served, the menu is also filled with photos and articles, which tells the history of this restaurant. For some reason, the restaurant was previously known as Hillman Restaurant instead of its current name - Manhill. I wonder why.

We ordered the claypot noodle. It was VERY good, from the soup base to the noodle. I could have finished up the entire pot!

Throughout dinner, I was curious where the sound of chinese musical instrument came from. Then, it just dawn upon me that it probably came from some cantonese opera singing. We confirmed with the 'crew' and I was right.

I asked if we would go up to take a peek. They were obliging and even refill our tea glasses before we went upstairs.

And there I was, listening to singing which I din understand... Even though, it was a good and unique experience.

Auntie Kim's

My colleague has been enticing me to try out the Korean food at Auntie Kim's. I finally went last Friday, during lunch :)
Address and phone number are below.
It is located on the stretch of eateries before Thomson Plaza (in the direction towards AMK).
The restaurant isn't big. Would suggest that reservations be made if going on weekends or in big groups.

These are the side dishes. The kimchi is quite good. But I think additional servings may cost $. Anyway, they were enough for just 2 persons.

We ordered Grilled Mackeral and Bibimbap (the latter was HIGHLY recommended by my colleague).

The grilled mackeral and its dip goes very well - very appetising + the fish skin is so crispy. Hmmm.... yummy!
As for the bibimbap, it isn't too bad but somehow I think it lacks something - cant articulate what it is. I cant help but thinks that the one at Ju Shin Jung East is better.
I would not mind going back there to try other dishes such as the beancurd soup, kimchi chigae and BBQ chicken :)

Dae Jang Geum Korean Restaurant

I remember going to this Korean Restaurant for dinner late last year. The name of the restaurant is Dae Jang Geum, supposedly the owner wanted to ride on the popularity of that Korean drama... but I have to say - I'd be very sad for the king if that was the standard of the food served to him. I exaggerated a bit lah...
25 shenton way, #01-01/02-01, YESS Leisure ( formerly is NTUC CLUB)
Tel: 6224 5525

That's the restaurant entrance... the dining halls are at 1st and 2nd level. I was late and me (trying to be too smart) greeted the waitress '안녕하세요! 주리아씨어디에요?'. She replied '이증으로올라가세요.' I was stunned for a while but I understood 이증... ho ho ho... so quickly went up to 2nd floor. From then onwards, I remembered this phrase. :)

The ladies has already placed order for the food... so I just ate and ate and ate.

We also had the korean steamboat... so i ate and ate and ate....

That was a close-up of one of the side dishes. Can't remember how it tasted like. Most of the dishes did not have a lasting impression of me. Maybe bcos my food company was good.... as usual, we had lots of laughter till the waiters had to remind us 'I'm sorry....'....

Pork BBQ.... I would say... not as presentable... the waiters make better eye candies. kekeke!

But the deco on 2nd floor is still quite unique.

Wld I go back again? Well, the food would not be the primary reason.
