Laksa from Ghim Moh Market

Having worked at Ghim Moh for almost a decade, the estate seems to be part of me.  I have seen the many changes there.  How many remembers there used to be a McDonald's at the present Kopitiam?  How many remembers that there used to be 5 coffeeshops in that cosy little estate.  Smiling Orchid Cake Shop was part of it and popular among the residents.  Funan Weng Ipoh Hor Fun was a small stall in the Ghim Moh Hawker Centre before the shop was moved to CBD and further expanded it's business to Toa Payoh.

The hawker centre is popular not just with the residents from Ghim Moh as well as from Holland estates.  It also attracted lunch crowds from Science Park, with it's weekly shuttles on Wednesdays and Fridays.  The food centre is extremely crowded on those days and long queues are apparent on a few popular hawker stalls.... Fried Kway Teow, Braised Duck Rice, Steamed Boneless Chicken Rice, Sliced Fish Hor Fun, Chwee Kueh etc.  Food prices are considered very reasonable ... mostly ranging from $2 to $3 for normal portion.

What's for my lunch today?

Katong Laksa!! Looks good?  It really is not bad.  The rice noodles have been cut to short pieces.  The way to eat this is really just to scoop using the spoon and chop sticks is not needed.  The $3 portion comes with prawns and lots of fishcake.  If you like it bland, this will suit you.  If you prefer it to be more savoury and spicy, add the chilli paste.  The thickness of the gravy is just nice, not too thick nor diluted.

The stall serves fishball noodles and mushroom minced pork noodles too... but look for the sign that says Katong Laksa to make sure you are at the right stall.  =)

Astons Express at Ghim Moh

On days where I do not feel like having a full meal during lunch or dinner, this is one of my favourite alternative choices.  For just $1.80, you get a soupbowl of mac n cheese.  The colour of the cheese looks too enticingly good, isn't it?  I have nothing to complain about for the price I pay, the portion I get, and the food quality. In fact, the portion is just nice.  Anything more might make you jerlat.

Ghim Moh Hawker Centre - Rong Yuan Cooked Food

Freshly-made chee cheong fun, glutinous rice, taro cake... try it before this is gone.  This stall is manned by a senior, whom I suppose who is already in his 60s.  He starts business at 4+am in the morning, serves mainly to the breakfast crowd.  On most days, his closes his stall by 8am.  On lucky days, he will open till about 2pm.  Even for someone who works in the vicinity, I consider it my lucky day if the stall is open during lunch hour.

The freshly made food, limited in variety, but the quality is maintained.  Highly recommended!

Chee Cheong Fun with glutinous rice.  The chee cheong fun is smooth in texture and springy.  Loves the sweet sauce that goes on the cheong fun.  The glutinous rice is soft, not too sticky... on some days, it may be a little dry.  Love the big dried shrimps hidden within the rice.

Laksa @ Ghim Moh Market

I am lucky, yet at the same time unlucky to have a stall selling delicious curry laksa near my workplace @ Ghim Moh Market (Blk 20 Ghim Moh Road).  Lucky to be able to enjoy a bowl of delicious laksa with thick flavourful gravy.  I hate laksa gravy that is diluted, masked behind the notion of it being healthy.  I say, it is healthy as long as I exclude hum (cockles) =P

Since tou geh isn't my favourable at all, that is always excluded as well. Without both, this laksa can still taste very appetising with the thick bee hoon, tou pok and fish cake and sambal chilli (err, I think there is no prawn in it).  Bottomline is - the success factor depends on the quality of laksa gravy.  Delicious gravies will be thick, savoury yet a taste of sweetness in it. Yummy!  Check it out!

Because of the popularity of their laksa, it is usually sold out by noon time.  So, do be early if you're making a special trip down to Ghim Moh just to try the laksa.  By the way, there are 2 stalls selling laksa in Ghim Moh Market.  The core business for this stall is hotpot noodles (小碗面)... yet their laksa is more popular than the Katong Laksa stall in the hawker centres.  What an irony.  Haha!

Astons Express

Astons Express
Blk 19 Ghim Moh Road
Wang Wei Li Coffeeshop
Tel: 6466 2325

Had craving for western food for lunch a few days ago and decided to check out Astons Express.  A few other people were already in the queue before me and I overheard their orders - mostly for the grilled items.  I thought that perhaps a better way to "cut-queue" would be to order something that isn't grilled so that the chef can prepare my food concurrently.  Sounds good?

Decided to order Crispy Fried Fish as the main coure and for the 2 side orders, I decided to go for hot side dishes - onion rings and french fries.  Sinful, isn't it?  All the deep-fried and unhealthy stuff.  Sigh...

For $6.50, I felt that it was really value-for-money.  The one big slab of fish was longer than the plate.  No complaints for the fish fillet, it was good enough for $6.50.  However, the fries was nothing to shout about.  Though it looked like it was sprinkled with seasoning, it tasted rather bland.  The onion rings were just passable too... BK onion rings probably tasted better.  But anyhow, how much can you expect from this price.  =)

Ghim Moh - Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow

Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow
Ghim Moh Market And Food Centre
Blk 20 Ghim Moh Road #01-12
Closed on Wednesdays and Fridays

The queue seems never ending but fried kway teow lovers do not mind the waiting 30mins to 40mins. The glass stall is plastered with raving reviews, that you can hardly see the elderly uncle manning the wok.

Some say "good things but wait".... but after my 2nd attempt, I guess this isn't my type of fried kway teow. I'd prefer the kway teow to be slightly burnt and with strongly fried kway teow aroma. It was slightly too watery for my liking.
The serving portion for $2.50 was considered small, at least to me.
