Chocolate Lava Cake from Chocolate Origin

Seriously, this lava cake in a cup ~ try it and you will love it.  The cake is almost perfect, at least to me, in terms of firmness, richness and sweetness.

It is an excellent idea to hold in a cup with the cold vanilla ice cream at the bottom with the warm and moist cake with the chocolate lava on top. Better still, there is no fuss, no mess and you can scrape the cup till the last bit of ice cream. At $5, this is an affordable indulgence when you need something to perk up your mood. ;)

Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie

Telephone (65) 6733-8893 Facsimile (65) 6733-8896
Opening Hours
Mondays to Sundays : 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Thanks to the UOB Christmas 2011 Charge and Redeem programme, I managed to qualify myself for this promotion.  Collected this cake from the Paragon (B1) branch.

The outer layer is a thick chocolate mousse.  Inside the cake, there is a layer of chestnut cream and sponge cake.  Between these 2 layers, it is filled with lychee mousse and pieces of fresh lychee!  The chocolate mousse is extremely smooth.  You may even taste a tint of bitterness because it uses dark chocolate for its mousse.

Great Chocz Sale

Frankly, I have never tried chocs and pastries from Chocz cos I consider them as atas confectionery.... But 1 fine day, my colleague and I chanced upon Chocz Pte Ltd (aka headquarters) located at Little Road. Not that the road is narrow or tiny, Little Road is the name of that road near Upper Paya Lebar Road.

The office or kitchen or whatever you call it is located in one of those buildings in an industrial area. Was walking under the hot and scorching sun and what caught my eye was a big signage "50% Off".... Kaypoh me...was curious and hence decided to check it out. Only to realise that it was Chocz cakes on sale - The Great Chocz Sale.

My colleague, who doesn't get as excited as I am at the sight of cakes, asked when the cakes were baked. The sales girl, who spoke limited English and a non-Singaporean, replied that the cakes were baked the day before.

Pralines were going at 30% off at the shop.

I bought a slice of cheese cake (to be shared with Valie) and 2 other slices of chocolate cakes - Chocolate Truffle or Fudge (can't rem) and Chocz Kawa Cake. The Truffle cake is very very good with a thick and sticky layer of dark chocolate. On the other hand, the kawa cake was a big letdown as I thought it would be one of their signature cake. The cake has several layers and the layers were way too hard.

Total damage for 3 slices of cake was $10.50. Well worth it, ya?

Chocz (Bukit Timah Plaza)

Went to check out NTUC Finest at Bukit Timah Plaza after hearing some raving reviews about this newly opened supermarket. It is supposed to be an upmarket version compared to other NTUC located in the housing estates.
I found the supermarket pretty normal but what's interesting is the co-location of Chocz inside the supermarket. On weekends, there are chocolate buffets during 4 designated time slots. Each person is $12 I think. Due to limited space, prior registration is required.

Gobi (The Central @ Clarke Quay)

I was on a snack spree to destress myself after a hectic week. Decided to check out Gobi, specialising in French pastries (desserts, sweets and chocolates), who calls themselves 'Happiness in a Box'.

Address: 6 Eu Tong Sen Street, The Central, #01-27
Tel: 6534 8187
It is a classy, dainty looking shop facing the main road.
I was a little disappointed to learn that there are only 12 types of chocolates available. 6 each for the Chocolate Factory and Fantasy range. Each piece of dessert is petite by itself. They look like miniature toys.
And, the sales staff told me that I can only mix and match only when there are no other customers around. Hmm.... Since there was no one around, I had my pick.
Ta da! Here's my selection - Dark Angel, Opera, Love Boat and 3 others which I forgot the names. I was also told that the sweets can't stay outside fridge beyond 1.5 hours. OMG!

How much did it cost? $12.80 for 6 pieces. (Found out that it only cost $9.80 a year and a half ago!)
Was it good? So far so good... I've not finished them all yet.

Chocolate Fondue

F invited P, JL, D and me to her place for a Fruit Chocolate Fondue session. Yummy!
I was hoping to see the chocolate fountain but it turned out to be this cute little thingie (which looks like an aromatherapy burner) ....
First, we melted the cocoa block in a separate bowl over a bowl of hot water.

These fruits are ready to be fondued - banana, chiku, strawberry and Korean pear.

Hmm... we also had mashmallow. Forgot to take pic of it.

Next, we heat up the chocolate by placing a tealight below. Then dip the cut fruits into the chocolate.

It was GOOD!
