[Singapore Restaurant] Wild Rocket at Mount Emily

Wild Rocket has recently announced that the restaurant will be relocated and that last day of business at the current premises, Mount Emily, will be 30 November 2013.  It has been almost 5 years ago when I last stepped into the restaurant and I knew I had to visit the restaurant before it is gone.  The new location for the restaurant has not been confirmed but Chef Willin Low plans to re-open the restaurant in Mar 2014.

We order 2 sets of 3-course lunch (S$32++ each) which comes with 1 starter, 1 main and 1 sweet.  Bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil was served while we waited for lunch to be served.

Starters:  Adobo duck with onsen-style quail egg with truffle mash and baby spinach; and Burmese tomato and blue swimmer crab salad.

On the house: Shitake mushroom kueh pie-ti.

Main dishes were Laksa pesto linguini with tiger prawns and quail egg; Roast Chilean seabass with chai poh confit and congee; and Salmon donburi with bonito and baby octopus red rice.

Sweets: Wild Rocket strawberry cheesecake (highly highly recommended) and pandan infused panna cotta with salted gula Melaka.

On the house: Wild Rocket Chendol.

All I can say (for all the dishes ordered) is that the dishes are uniquely named, the food are carefully cooked and it is a bliss to dine there.  We were fortunate to be offered complimentary dishes (because my friend is a regular customer) and that does not mean that those were of sub-standard.  There was none that I can say that it wasn't worth the calories.

SG Cafe Series: Kith Cafe

This is 1 café which appears to be full-house almost ALL the time.  If you go on weekends, it is not advisable if you go with an empty stomach.  Simply because - be prepared to queue and wait.  The café is packed especially during breakfast!

There are seats in both the indoor and outdoor sections but seating capacity is limited by the shop space.

The service staff are quite efficient and experienced.  There aren't the typical pretty-looking waiters and waitresses that you may find in our cafes.  The feeling I get at the café is rather homely... it is like visiting a neighbourhood coffeeshop (abit an atas one) but in downtown.

Tried the Spanish Hot Chocolate with Fresh Cream.  It tasted great!  The chocolate was thick and the satisfying thing is that - it tasted like cocoa.  This is not meant to be lame because too many cafes serve hot chocolate that does not meet the drink's standard.

Bought these golden-coin butter cookies too.  The cookies are big, really rich (and complete) in taste and fresh!  2 thumbs up from me.  If you enjoy rich cookies, you will love this!

Opening Hours: 8am to 10pm

Getting there:
Train MRT and alight at Dhoby Ghaut Station.  Take the Orchard Road exit and walk towards Penang Road, Park Mall.

Cool Chix on the Block - Kkul Dak 꿀닭

Following the success of the other Korean Fried Chicken restaurants in Singapore, Kkuldak 꿀닭 (honey chicken), has found its way into Plaza Singapura this month.  *chirp chirp*

What sets this apart from the rest is that Kkuldak is based on the Korean Street Food concept, that means it is just grab and go. No cushy seats, no melodic songs and no service charge!  Just the way you grab and go along the shopping belt in Myeongdong or Gangnam.

It is fast, convenient, easy to eat because the chicken is in bite-size.  The munchies are first deep tried before they are pan fried in honey, sweet and sour or spicy sauces.  The tender munchies are flavourful and crispy on the outer layer.  Choose whether you like to go with cheese powder or mustard sauce. My recommendation is to go for spicy flavour and mustard sauce because that's the closest to what you get in the actual kimchi land.

Smallest cup (in photo) costs $4.50.  The fried chicken comes with ddokpokki 떡볶이 (rice cake) and 1 mini potato munchi stick.  A little expensive but the satisfaction is there if you are a fan of Korean Fried Chicken.  This may just replace the original KFC. ^^

There's also an option to upsize to a meal, complete with rice and kimchi.

Chalk up points on your rewards card and you can return for some free munchies.  Have fun!

Note: The stall will be expanding its menu from August.  Look forward to it!

Thai Express : Sa-nook Red Tom Yum Fish Soup

Fancy having some hot and spicy (yet affordable) Tom Yum?  Consider trying this Sa Nook set meal at Thai Express.  In Thai, Sa Nook means "fun" and it is a way of the Thai's life.

I am not sure how many knows that you can request for some cashew nuts (appetisers) while waiting for your food to be served, and it is free of charge.  The sugar-coated cashew nuts fried with lemongrass, curry leaves and dried chilli is rather addictive.  Fret not, it isn't spicy when though it is fried using dried chilli.  On days where the food quality is so-so, this might just be the saving grace.

The Sanook Tom Yum Fish Soup's portion was quite reasonable.  Came with a few pieces of thick fish slides and some straw mushrooms.  The soup was hot and spicy to the right level and would be a good choice especially on rainy days.  The set came with 3 small green curry chicken balls.  Frankly, I didn't taste much of a green curry and the texture wasn't as crispy as they look.  The chicken balls were probably made by mashing with some potato mash.  The sago with red-coloured attap seeds dessert was alright, if you are not a fussy dessert person.

Strongly recommended by my colleague to try this Thai Style Sir-fried Kang Kong with fermented beans and chilli padi, it was indeed very very good.  We, Chinese, usually like food with the wok-hei fragrance.  That requires the chef to have good skills to cook the dishes in high heat and without getting charred, and this stir-fried kangkong has that!  As you can see, the dishes was cooked with a generous portion of fermented beans and lots of chilli padi.  But a word of caution too.  The dish is rated with 2 chillies, if you are not a fan of spicy food, stay clear from this!

This dish is highly recommended, if you are at a lost of what to order at the restaurant.

Ichiban Sushi Japanese Restaurant @ Plaza Singapura

Ichiban Sushi Japanese Restaurant
Plaza Singapura #06-05 /06
68 Orchard Road
Tel: 6837 0113
Sun to Fri: 11.30am -10.00pm
Sat & PH Eve: 11.00am -10.30pm

This Japanese casual dining restaurant is one such popular place that if you're there for dinner at 7pm, be prepared to queue for 30-45mins to get seats.  If you're there with a big group of people, be sure to join the queue early if you can.

This time, I tried the Half Curry Udon.  This is good if you aren't feeling very hungry to gobble down a full-meal.  The curry standard is acceptable.  It comes with chicken chunks and the usual japanese curry ingredients mainly, potatoes and carrots.

Price is equally reasonable at $6.90.

Unfortunately, it is the only half-portion item on the food menu.  If you arent a fan of curry and not feeling very hungry, you can select other ala carte dishes such as gyoza or sushi. Would be great if they had a greater variety for the half-portion dishes.  Alternatively, check out Curry Favour located at Stamford House.
