[Singapore Restaurant] Experience Korea's Most Beloved Dishes from Bibigo

The wave of Korean Fried Chicken + Beer has hit the sunny island of Singapore when this food combo known as Chimaek (치맥) was featured in the popular Korean drama "My Love from the Stars" (별에서 온 그대) earlier this year.  The word "Chimaek" originates from the word Chicken (Koreans pronounce the word as Chikin) and Maekju (which means beer in Korean).  Chimaek is especially popular during the summer seasons when the heat wave is up and the beer has the cooling effect.  It is so popular that an event "Daegu Chicken and Beer Festival" is held annually!

Being summer all year round in Singapore, it is timely that Bibigo has added Chimaek to their menu starting from September!

What's unique about Bibigo's version of Chimaek is that, you get to eat the fried chicken with 2 different sauces (soybean and sweet & spicy) and salt!  Personally, my preference would be the soybean sauce, followed by the sweet & spicy sauce.  The salt is dry and doesn't quite stay on the chicken.  The plus point about having Chimaek is the refreshing pickled white radish.  But honestly, the plain fried chicken itself is already quite delicious and addictive.

Order the Gangnam Chicken as an ala carte dish (6-piece chicken) at $10 or top up another $10 for 2 bottles of iced-cold Hite beer.  Hite beer is really popular in Korea!

For an authentic Korean meal, order a Spicy Kimchi Stew ($10) and Kimchi pancake ($9).  The stew comes with a bowl of Korean short grain rice and a kimchi side-dish.  In fact, these 2 dishes have been newly added to Bibigo's menu and they are quite decent, although I think the pancake would have tasted even better if it was crispier.

Just a small tip to share.  The Kimchi pancake does not come with any dipping sauce.  But not to be disappointed, the soybean sauce from the Gangnam Chicken dish is a perfect dipping sauce for the pancake!

For non-spicy food lovers, another dish on the limited-time menu would be the Seafood Noodles ($9).  Udon is used as the main staple, cooked with seafood and a generous portion of green veggies, it makes a good option on days when you just feel like having something light and soupy.

Overall, the pricing for these new dishes are quite affordable and there is no price differentiation between lunch and dinner.  The food portion is easily sufficient for those with small to moderate appetite.  Head down to Bibigo with 2 to 3 other friends to experience all these dishes!

[Korean Museum] Be (Dis)illusioned at Alive Museum

Now you see it, now you don't!  Have you ever been disillusioned by what you think you saw?  Get imaginative and let's see how your eyes can play tricks on you (or your friends), at the Alive Museum Singapore!

Located at Suntec City, downtown of Singapore, Alive Museum Singapore is South Korea's first and original 3D illusionary museum.  This is the place where 3D art (including trick art, digital art, object art and experimental art) comes alive with clever painting, shading and drawing techniques.  Globally, Alive Museum has 15 branches spreading from South Korea to China, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and now Singapore!

Believe it or not, all the artworks are hand-painted and hand-crafted by the museum's dedicated R&D team.  To keep up the exciting experience, 30% of the exhibits are refreshed every year!  To kick start, the following are my 10 favourite exhibits:

Number 10: Help!  Don't eat me!

Number 9: Contortionist at the Circus

Number 8: Table Tennis Match

Number 7: Mermaid under the Sea

If you can't get enough of the exhibits in thie 10,000 sq ft museum, you should consider making a trip to visit the largest branch at Jeju Island, which is 4 times bigger!

[Singapore Restaurant] Bibigo: Hangover Soup, Feast Noodles and Grilled dishes in Korean Sauces

Trying out new Korean dishes is something I always enjoy doing!  These 4 new dishes on the Bibigo menu were delicious in their own way.

Haejangguk, or squid and beansprout soup is popular among the working class in Korea since more than 100 years ago.  This is a quick and simple nutritious dish that has rejuvenating effect, since the drinking culture in Korea is really strong.  It is also known as the Hangover soup. It is essentially rice with soup, with squid and beansprouts as the main ingredients.  The squid was fresh and wasn't too tough to chew while the soup was light and refreshing.

Janchi Guksu, literally means 'Feast Noodles', which is a Korean noodle dish made of wheat flour noodles with a light anchovy-flavored broth.  This dish is served during special events such as during birthday parties and wedding feasts for centuries throughout Korea as this noodles symbolises longevity.  The texture of the noodles was really smooth like "mee sua".  Other than the slices of egg and vegetables, there was a piece of beancurd.  The soy chilli sauce, meant to be the tipping sauce for the beancurd was really tasty.

Bibigo Spicy Chicken, the signature char-grilled chicken marinated in gochujang, red pepper sauce, served with seasonal vegetables.  Korean condiment, gochujang, is the most famous and most commonly used sauce in preparing Korean cuisine.  The primary ingredients for gochujang include red chilli powder, glutinous rice powder, fermented soy bean and salt.  This is a very tasty condiment when used for meat dishes.

The Spicy Chicken dish is really really quite spicy.  Despite the spiciness, it was really tasty.  The chicken pieces were well marinated and the meat was nice and tender.

Grilled Ssamjang Pork, was also very impressive.  Ssamjang is another type of Korean sauce which comprises gochujang, doenjang (crushed, dried and fermented soybeans), sesame oil, onion and garlic.  This sauce is typically used when eating BBQ dishes wrapped in lettuce.  For this dish, ssamjang was used as a marinating sauce instead and it was delicious!  The slightly charred pork brought out another delicious dimension to this dish.

[Korean Food] Bibigo goes to Suntec City

It is Chuseok on Thursday!  Celebration starts ahead of Chuseok as Bibigo celebrates the opening of it's 4th Singapore outlet at Suntec City!  The menu is complete with selection of traditional dishes including soup, hot stone dishes, pancakes rice, noodles etc; as well as modern and fusion dishes such as salads, desserts and drinks.  These are the dishes which I have tried and my verdict is ~ ~ 2 thumbs up!

Spicy Soft Tofu Stew with Seafood.  Served in a sizzling-hot hotstone bowl, the soup was really appetizing and the spiciness level was just right.  While the tofu was firm and may not be as soft as you expected, it goes not break away easily.

The Hot-Stone Chicken was yummy too.  The char-grilled chicken was well-marinated and the chicken thigh meat was tender and juicy.  The balance  of sweet and savoury taste was almost perfect.

Courgette pancake is exclusive to the Suntec outlet.  It is a Korean-style pancake with courgette (also known as zucchini, it is a type of vegetable which is related to the pumpkin family), sweet potato, butternut squash, topped with rocket salad.  The pancake was really fragrant and slightly crispy.  This is suitable for non-meat eater.

The characteristics of Bibigo pancake is that there is much more vegetable than the batter.  In this seafood pancake, scallion is used as the main ingredient topped with shrimps and squids.  This way, the dish is healthier since vegetables contain fibre!

Meals aren't complete without desserts.  The glazed sweet potato is a unique dish.  The fried sweet potato is coated with a layer of Korean grain syrup.  Even though the sweet potato has been fried, the dish managed to maintain the root vegetable's moisture.  The dish comes with glazed walnut and rice crispy too.  This dish is also suitable for non-meat eater.

If you like something cold, go for the Rosi Nero ice cream, which is made of black rice.  The ice cream is light, refreshing and not too sweet.

The Bibigo salad is another new addition to it's menu.  Served with apple sauce, this is a perfect dish for a light meal comprising of greens, chicken breast meat, crispy rice and tomatoes.

At least 5 dishes are added to Bibigo's existing menu and exclusive to the Suntec City outlet to mark the celebration of a major milestone for the global brand.  The launch of this latest outlet puts Singapore on the map as 1 of the 2 leading regions for Bibigo in the world!

The menu addition features some traditional favourites from Korea such as Hot Stone Galbi (Beef), Courgette Pancake (as featured above), BBQ Spicy Chicken, Bibigo Salad (as featured above), Oriental Chopped Salad and Grilled Ssamjang Pork.  So, be sure to check out Bibigo at Suntec City!

isn't the tea pot interesting?  If you'd like your tea to taste light, tilt it at 45 degrees.  If you like it thick, tilt it to 90 degrees so that the tea leaves can immerse in the water. =)

Franky's Pocha [Closed]

Went back to Franky's Kaffe again...3rd time within a month. But this time round, it is for a proper Korean dinner.

Although only 3 side dishes were served, these side dishes were really yummy. We had a round of refill. Loved the kimchi, which has the right crunchiness and sourless which was just right for my liking.

The 3 of us shared the Kimchi Stew ($25). We had a choice of adding pork or tuna into the stew and we chose pork. The ingredients in the stew included kimchi (of course), pork (of course) enoki mushroom, tofu, chilli, chilli padi, onion etc.

The stew took a while to cook and for the kimchi soup to become flavourful.... It was a little bland and we almost wanted to add the kimchi side dish into the stew. We had a refill of the soup and the soup finally tasted good towards the end.

The seafood pancake ($18) was quite disappointing. Firstly, we waited too long for it and it was finally served when we already finished half of the stew. Disappointingly, the pancake dough was not completely dry and crispy and the pajeon taste was absent.

Do note that rice ($2) had to be ordered separately from the ala carte dishes. Do also note that they will also take a while to "cook" the rice! We waited for probably 10 to 15 mins....

Despite the long wait and disappointment, I think I will still be back to try other dishes =)
The "Coffee Prince atmosphere" does create some disillusion that you're in Korea... except for the warm weather.
