Hong Kong Wanton Mee (香港云吞面)

It was an immediate decision to check out this wanton mee stall after I read the posting on ieat. I also emailed to my fellow ex-AJCians and shared with them my excitement of finally being able to eat my fav wanton mee again. Some of them do remember the stall vague, some have no recollection of what they had been eating during those 2 years. For me, it was this wanton mee stall that filled my tummy back then.

My ex-AJCian colleague also remembers this stall but during her time, the stall was famous for their Chicken and Rice.

I check out the stall the next day (it was abt 2 weeks back) but I had just missed their operating hour. I reached at 3pm but they close at 2pm. Had a short chat with the auntie, who said she sorta remembers me, and I promised I'd be back again.

BTW, the stall is now located at

ABC Brickworks Market

Jalan Bukit Merah

(the hawker centre behind Alexandra IKEA)
The stall is located around the centre section in the hawker centre with a bright yellow signboard.

Me finally sink my teeth in the yummy wanton mee and ipoh hor fun again this afternoon. Oh no, did I ate 2 portions of food??

For the record, each plate of noodle is only $2, considered the cheapest you can find nowadays.

The wanton mee comes with a separate bowl of soup & wanton. The noodles are QQ. I like the soy sauce used.

Below is the ipoh hor fun, which I always asked to add fried wanton, back then in AJC.

This plate of 15 wanton only costs $2. The price is just unbelieveable. A little bird whispered in my ears that uncle and auntie are quite well-to-do wor... I just they are really doing something that they enjoy.

211 Roof Terrace Cafe

Have been wanting to try out the food at 211 Roof Terrace Cafe for the longest time. Last night's dinner there was rather unexpected ie. unplanned. And finally got the chance to use the food vouchers from ABN Amro CC.
211 Roof Terrace Cafe
Holland Road Shopping Centre
211 Holland Ave
#04-01
Telephone: 6462-6194

The place was rather crowded and for a moment, I thought we weren't gonna get a seat since I did not make reservations. Unfortunately, a table for 4 was available and we took it. There is an indoor section and an outdoor section with a choice of smoking or non-smoking area.
Since I had a rather heavy lunch, I opted for something light....
an ice chocolate ($4.50) - just cold milk with chocolate fudge.
It was rather disappointing or maybe it wasn't the type that I like. Actually, it might have tasted great if they could just add a scoop of chocolate gelato. It wld have made a whole world of difference. And I probably won't mind paying $1 more for it.
This item is marked with a 'new' on the menu - Apple and Celery Salad ($7.50). Plainly diced apples with slices celery in salad sauce garnished with 3 pieces of green veg, 3 pieces of cherry tomatoes and some raisins. Serving portion isn't big.

R had 'Cod Fish' ($26) which I had expected to be a rather decent huge portion but it came in half the size of what I had expected. Looked charred but taste wise, it was alright. The spaghetti was quite delicious though a bit oily.

It was a rather expensive dinner, if not for the voucher I had.

Holland Village XO Fish Head Bee Hoon

The coffeeshop is always packed, when the stall is opened, regardless of lunch or dinner.
Holland Village XO Fish Bee Hoon
Blk 46, Holland Drive, #01-359
Tel: 6778 3691
Opening hours are 12– 2.30 pm and 5– 11 pm daily

This is the dish that draws the day and night crowd - XO Fish Head Bee Hoon. The soup is made of fish broth mixed with XO. Not sure how much XO is added, at least not enough to make one take nonsense.
The fish slices have been fried before adding to the thick bee hoon and the soup.

$10 for a 2-pax portion.

$7 for a 1-pax portion.

A little expensive but it is well worth it.

Hokkaido House - Gratin Sauce for Bread

This one is really simple to make, provided you have an oven. It takes only 1 minute to place your bread in your baking bowl, add in the sauce and send into the oven for 15 mins. Wala, your meal is ready!
The sauce is actually a mixture of carrot, potato, cheese and milk. Sounds pretty healthy too.

Jackson Market : Dong Shen Frog Porridge

Jackson Market (along Macpherson Road) will cease operation as of 24 Sep, making way for the construction of tunnels in that area. R and I decided to go for the Frog Porridge before it is closed and to check out where they will be moving to.
Good news - their new location is just within the vicinity, next to the Bak Kut Teh stall next to Jackson Market.

The stall specialises in only frog porridge in several variety - onion & ginger, chicken essence, marmite etc. We ordered the onion & ginger frog porridge.

This is the portion for 2 persons - a pot of braised frogs (about 3 frogs I think) and a pot of porridge.

The porridge tastes like the cantonese style. A bit savoury with lots of fried onions. :)

You're supposed to scoop the porridge into a separare bowl and add the frogs and gravy on top. The gravy is very tasty. I guess the quality of dark soy sauce they used must be of top grade + maybe oyster sauce?

Overall, it was a delicious meal but a little expensive - $22 for this meal.

Paisley and Cream Cafe

Another lifestyle concept cafe (Paisley & Cream Cafe) - good for an afternoon tea with friends on a weekday. Located along Eu Tong Sen Road at The Central @ Clarke Quay (#01-09/10).

I was attracted by the pretty sweet things in the showcase... cupcakes!

I picked this - chocolate and vanilla cream on top. The cake itself is also chocolate & vanilla... it looks like marble cake inside. The topping is made of butter cream so I like it. As for the cake, it was slightly on the dry side. It could have been more chocolatey. Perhaps I will be back for a all chocolate cupcake the next time round.

If you're into making cupcakes, they sell those icing flowers & hearts to dress up for cupcakes.

$3.50 for the above cupcake. Is it expensive?

Apparently, they are going at $2.50 if you buy them after 5pm or so...

Allan Bakes

Chanced upon this cake shop - Allan Bakes - hidden in a quiet corner at The Village Centre (3 South Buona Vista Road, 02-13, Tel : 6774-7100).

I was attracted by all these delicious looking cakes through the glass walls. It was about closing time (abt 8pm) but am glad that I managed to grab a piece of Allan's signature cakes - Blueberry cheese cake. That was what Allan pointed to me when I asked him "What would you recommend?"

The cheesecake was moist and made of good cheese. At the base, it has a thin biscuit crust.

However, i would complain that it was a little too small ... it costs $5 and it could easily get a piece that is 1.5x this size from other cafes. But in terms of quality, it is 2 thumbs up.

Mooncakes from Pine Garden's Cakes

Read ST Posh Nosh's review on mooncakes from Pine Garden's Cake and decided to check it out. Something different, as normally mooncakes from hotels will get onto the list.
Address: Blk 529 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10
It looks like a normal traditional HDB estate cake shop. There was also a string of crowd surrounding the mooncake area.

The mooncakes are kept in these wooden showcases. There is a wide selection of mooncakes on the list, unfortunately, a lot were already sold out. I had wanted to buy the Crispy Skin Yam Paste mooncake....
In the end, I decided to give their '5-nuts' ($5.50) and single yolk ($6) a try. '5-nuts' typically include walnuts, pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds, almonds and peanuts. Jujube paste or red bean is used to make the fillings.

Also bought something different, which I initially thought that this is a Teochew type of mooncake but after reading up, it seems that this is a Hakka mooncake ($2.50). I will need to read up more to confirm...
The filling is also made up of some nuts, winter melons and probably cinnamon or maybe pepper. Interesting piece of cake...

Single Yolk White Lotus Mooncake from Raffles The Plaza

Another delicious mooncake. The lotus paste is smooth and not dry. Yolk is also fresh.
A little on the sweet side but bearable.
The one I had comes in a longevity peach shape. I am not sure if this is the standard mooncake shape for Raffles The Plaza mooncake.

Durian Mooncake from Marriott Hotel

Just like its hotel - Marriot Hotel, this is a 5-star durian mooncake. The fillings are made of fresh durian. The sales staff would advise that your mooncake must go into the freezer if not consumed within 3 hours.
$42 for a box of 8 mini mooncakes.

Minicupcakes

Besides donuts, the other talk of the town is probably cupcakes. I never imagined that there is so much creativity we can put in to turn boring cupcakes into 'oh, i cant bear to eat it!' cupcakes.

These cupcakes were deliciously done up by Nani, Queen of Cupcakes.

Thai Express (Heartland Mall)

Whenever I go to Thai Express, I realised that I always cannot remember what dishes I have tried before and I ended up ordering the same dish, only realising it when it was presented to me.
This is the dish I am talking about - Phat Thai Talay ($9.90). You can't go wrong with this dish. The serving comes with prawn, fish and squid as ingredients. According to the menu, it is the most famous of all Thai Fried Noodles with seafood, loved by everyone for its sweet, sour, spicy and nutty taste.
And the current promo with Stanchart for spending at least $25, you get this fried spring rolls for free. :)

Swensen's (Holland V)

Call me boring but whenever i go Swensen's, it is either fish & chips or baked rice for me :P
I only managed to finish the spicy dices of curry chicken portion of the baked rice + the cripies. It looks small but it is filled with calories considering the amout of rice below the chicken curry toppings.
Next time i shd share with someone else.

Something to comment abt the service. We called in to make reservation and ordered our food as our past experience tells us that waiting time can sometimes be untolerable and we do have limited lunch hour. We told them that we will be there at 12.45pm and asked for the food to be ready. When half of us reach there at 12.45pm, they already placed our food on the table, even though the chairs were empty.
A little surprise, and I can't quite decide if I shd compliment them for their efficiency or to condemn them for being inconsiderate to leave the food to cool for themselves before the customers arrive.
Well, this is just something to take note of.

Hyang To Gol Korean Restaurant

I have read some good reviews about this restaurant but hesitated to try as those reviews had advised to make reservations and also, the food aint cheap. Also heard that it is one of the popular Korean restaurants that the Korean community in Singapore frequents.
But by chance, on a rainy weekend, we came to this restaurant as it was the next most convenient stop.
Address: 165 Tanjong Pagar Road
Amara Hotel, Level 2
Tel:6220-7160

This greets us at the entrance to the restaurant. This restaurant is not part of the hotel F & B and hence, no carpark redemption or whatsoever privilege attached.
The diners in the restaurant are majority Koreans. I felt I had make a good choice. :)
The menu with chinese name on it.

Their service was good and prompt. We were served by 2 Koreans, one of which we suspect is the ladyboss. Soon came the side dishes. I love the salad.

I ordered the Samgye Tang (Ginseng Chicken Soup). Piping hot and still steaming hot when i finished it. Serving portion is quite big. There were 2 moderately big ginseng roots in the soups. It tasted quite alright.

R has the bibimbap. It came with beef so for non-beef eaters, got to inform them while ordering to exclude the beef or replace with other meat. It was also ok, though I thought it could be better. Maybe this is the authentic korean taste :P

After we finished the main courses. there came the cold ginger drink and fresh fruits! I am always amazed by the effort they take to cut the oranges into round pieces.

Total damage was about $40 for 2 persons. Worth it if you go there with an empty stomach and able to gobble down all the food.
